Female schooling in Benin remains an area of concern. Lack of access to education for girls and gender inequities in schooling potentially affects areas such as female empowerment and employment, child health and nutrition. Since 2010, the Benin Government under the leadership of the Ministry of Secondary Education has been tackling the issue of low female enrolment in the secondary level with a full subsidy of school fees. This intervention is the centerpiece for increasing girls’ education beyond the primary level in Benin. IERPEs impact evaluation relies exploits variation in the treatment status across birth cohorts to identify the impact of the full subsidy of school fees.
