Training Department

Masters Program

Master in Public Economics and Applied Statistics

Goal

The program prepares students for careers in government and international development agencies. The program also prepares students for doctoral studies in the social sciences.

There will be a maximum of 25 students admitted each year starting in July 2006.The duration of the program is two years and the degree will be jointly awarded by the University of Abomey-Calavi and the Institute for Empirical Research in Political Economy (IERPE).

Curriculum

The core training will consist of three parts:

  1. Standard graduate training in economics: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, econometrics and program evaluation.
  2. Real analysis, probability and statistics, and experimental methods.
  3. African History, Sociology and politics.

Students will also take part in optional seminars in development economics, public health policies, public education policies, rural and urban development, democratic governance, Advanced Game Theory and Advanced Econometrics.

Faculty

Director: Leonard Wantchekon

More than thirty internationally renowned professors who are on the faculty of leading universities such as Cornell, Johns Hopkins, New York University in USA, Laval University and University of Montreal in Canada, University of Toulouse and DIAL-Paris in France. There are also professors from West African Universities such as University of Abomey-Calavi (Benin), University of Lome (Togo) and University of Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso).

Admissions

Applicant Profile
Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree in economics, statistics, mathematics, or any related field. Students with previous training in economics and/or quantitative methods will be preferred, although this is not a prerequisite for admission.

Admission Test
Written test: February 15th & 16th, 2006
Location: Cotonou and other locations to be determined
Results: February 28th, 2006

Tuition Fees
For students: 1 000 000 FCFA
For civil servants: 1 500 000 FCFA

Scholarships
Two "Innocent et Virginie Wantchekon" scholarships will be offered to the best applicants. Each of them will be worth 800 000 FCFA per year, and their recipients will be exempt from paying tuition fees.

Applicants should consider applying for scholarships through University Agency of la Francophonie and the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), or the European Union. For more information, please contact us.

Applications must be received by the IREEP’s office by January 31st, 2006.The following documents should be included:

  1. Filled application (available on www.ireep.org)
  2. Copy of the last degree
  3. Detailed Vitae
  4. Authorization of the employers (for civil servants)
  5. Application fee of 5 000 FCFA to be paid to the IREEP
