Training Department

Introduction

The IERPE offers a high level comprehensive theoretical and practical training in empirical political economy. The scope of the training is multidisciplinary and will help students master advanced techniques of applications of mathematics to social sciences, and develop the analytical skills necessary to address central issues in sustainable development and public policy. The core aspects of the program include courses in probability theory, statistics, applied mathematics, macro and microeconomics. A special emphasis will be placed on the methodology of causal inference applied in rigorous hypothesis testing using state of the art statistical packages. Since the program involves bridging the gap between fundamental research in empirical political economy and key issues pertaining to the challenge of development, the coursework also includes rigorous courses in analytical comparative politics, history of African societies, and political institutions as well in order to identify their effects.

Prof. Leonard Wantchekon, founding director of the IERPE
