Fundraising
The mission of the Institute for Empirical Research in Political Economy is to combine graduate training in Quantitative Political Economy with advanced empirical research in political economy of development. Through its active partnership with government agencies, local political parties on one hand and citizens on the other, the Institute will be able to disseminate the research it produces to those in a position to effect policy changes.
While the IERPE actively seeks support for specific research projects, general funding for the Institute's ongoing activities is crucial to its success. All contributions will be put to use in a manner that acknowledges the generous support of the donor. Specifically, the Institute needs funding for the following purposes:
Faculty and Students
The Institute aims to enroll its first class of Masters students in the fall of 2005. Contributions could be directed for several specific purposes, including financial support for student fellowships, faculty recruitment, or classrooms and other structural needs. This type of support will allow the Institute to recruit and train promising young scholars regardless of their financial need.
Summer School
The IERPE offers a Summer School targeting focusing on one very crucial aspect of social research: program evaluation. The first Summer School took place from July 2 to July 16, 2004, in Cotonou, Benin.
To ensure that students could attend regardless of financial need, full tuition support was offered to all students. In 2005, the Institute intends to recruit students from all over West Africa. While tuition will be introduced in order to defray some of the costs, the Institute aims to offer generous tuition support to duly qualified students with financial constraints.
Conferences
The Institute aims to organize at least one conference per year in West Africa. The conferences will bring together researchers from around the world and policy makers from around the region. The conferences will help integrate the Institute's research activities in the process of policy decision making in the region.
Data Collection and Field Research
Accurate and reliable data are an essential component of sound social science research. One of the core objectives of the Institute is to gather comprehensive data on public goods and services, which will, in turn, allow researchers at the Institute and elsewhere to conduct meaningful evaluations of development programs. Donation earmarked for data collection can help ensure that up-to-date estimates of the provision of and demand for public goods are available to all.
The Institute
While capital donations give the Institute the most flexibility, in-kind donations are also helpful. They could include technological equipment, software, library materials, office supplies or textbooks.
